Milestones

Apparently Thursday was the longest day of the year. I'm a bit embarrassed because I somehow thought that always fell on June 21, but the Internet tells me it can also be the 20th or 22nd, and it was the 20th this year. So I guess I failed to observe the occasion in any way on Thursday rather than Friday. Either way, it's all downhill from here. See you on the Winter solstice, when the lack of sunlight will have transformed me into an utter monster, and likely a fat one at that.

Another milestone of sorts is that I believe I may have actually won Uno for the first time in my life today. I mean, it's totally possible I won it as a kid and just don't remember, but every time I can think of I've just been praying for the game to end as it went on and on and people insisted on "playing for second." As Tanya Harding's mother said in the TV movie when I was a kid, "What is second? The first loser." But anyway, I beat not just my niece and nephew but also their parents and my mother, who literally did not even know how to play, so that's pretty impressive. Come to think of it, I was trying to let my niece and nephew win, so I sort of lost by winning. The streak continues.

Also, we're celebrating two years in our house this week. It's been a magical period full of unexpected maintenance work and unnecessary disputes over paint colors. We do love the place, though, especially the dog, who has really taken to running up and down the stairs and hallways for no reason. I'm more of a lying in the hammock guy, but that's probably not surprising to anyone.
